THIRTEEN

“You did say it was a bad idea,” said the sheriff. “You weren’t lying.”

Doc waved his hand dismissively. “Yeah, I said that. But hearing it out loud, I think it makes perfect sense.”

“It makes perfect sense that before killing a man a person would attach their shoes backwards? Why would anyone do that?”

“I don’t mean it makes logical sense, Sheriff. If you’re looking for hard logic, I ain’t got any for you. But if you’re looking for a scenario that fits the evidence in front of us, I can’t think of a better one. The killer put on shoes backwards, walked across the park, met up with Vargas here, killed him, turned his shoes the right way, and carefully retraced his steps back to the road.”

“But why would anybody do that?” asked the sheriff. “It seems to me that trying to step in your own prints is a terribly slow way to escape a murder scene.”

Doc nodded. “For most people, perhaps. But these folks holed up at Rose’s aren’t most people, are they? They’ve got special talents. Maybe one of them is particularly adept at step-retracing.”

“It’s not so different from tight-rope walking, I suppose,” said Bentley.

The sheriff and deputy locked eyes and in unison said “The acrobat.”
